Medical Staff

Tacoma Radiation Oncology Center uses a team approach for patient care. Within our centers, our board certified radiation oncologists lead a highly trained health care team. We have full-time board certified medical physicists and dosimetrists who work closely with our physicians to ensure optimal treatment planning and delivery. Our therapists are certified by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists in Radiation Therapy.

Our physicians work closely with your other doctors to provide a coordinated delivery for your care.

Dr. Michael Soronen

Dr. Soronen Dr. Soronen earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1969. His postgraduate training includes a surgery internship and radiation oncology residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. He was on the attending staffs of University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, and Veterans Administration Hospital. He is board certified in Therapeutic Radiology.

He holds multiple medical memberships including the American College of Radiation Oncology, American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the American Radium Society, Pierce County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association and American Board of Radiology.

He is on the active staff of St. Joseph Hospital and MultiCare Medical Center and holds courtesy positions at the rest of Franciscan Health Systems' sites, Good Samaritan Hospital and Auburn General Hospital.

In July of 1975, Dr. Soronen began his practice of radiation oncology in Tacoma. In 1979, he co-founded Tacoma Radiation Oncology at Jackson Hall.

Dr. Dean Mastras

Dr. Mastras Dr. Mastras earned his bachelor's degree from Lehigh University and his medical degree from University of Vermont. He completed his postgraduate training at University of Hawaii and University of Washington Medical Center and was certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Mastras joined Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in 1993. He holds medical staff privileges at Tacoma General, Good Samaritan, Allenmore, St. Joseph, St. Francis and St. Clare hospitals, and Auburn General Hospital.

He holds memberships in multiple medical societies including the Pierce County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, American College of Radiation Oncology, Western Association of Gynecologic Oncologists, and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Randy Sorum

Dr. SorumDr. Sorum joined the staff of Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in 1999. As a graduate of Creighton University, Dr. Sorum obtained his medical degree and completed his internship at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. He is board certified in Therapeutic Radiology.

He holds memberships with the Pierce County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association, American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American Brachytherapy Society, and the American College of Radiology among others. He is on the active staff of Good Samaritan Hospital and holds courtesy privileges at MultiCare Medical Center, Franciscan Health Systems and Auburn General Hospital.

Dr. Michael McDonough

Dr. McDonoughA native of Tacoma, Dr. McDonough received his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and his medical degree from St. Louis University. He completed an internship in internal medicine at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. He completed residency training in Radiation Oncology at Wayne State University in Detroit. He is board certified in Therapeutic Radiology.

Dr. McDonough practiced radiation oncology at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis. He also served on the faculty of the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. He returned to Tacoma to join the Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in June 2001 and holds medical staff privileges at Tacoma General, Good Samaritan, Allenmore, St. Joseph, St. Francis and St. Clare hospitals, and Auburn General Hospital.

He holds memberships with the Pierce County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association, American College of Radiology, American College of Radiation Oncology, American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and American Brachytherapy Society. His clinical interests include 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, brachytherapy, breast and prostate cancer, and hyperbaric medicine.

Dr. Kenneth Bergman

Dr. BergmanDr. Bergman received his bachelor's degree from the University of California - Santa Barbara and his medical degree from UCLA; he graduated with academic honors from both colleges. While at UCLA, he was involved in basic science and clinical research and published several papers about his work using Positron Emission Tomography (PET), an imaging technique that enables physicians to monitor the chemical function of organs and tissues.

Dr. Bergman completed his internship at Tucson Medical Center and did his residency training at the University of Washington, where he was awarded an American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellowship.

His areas of specialization include 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, as well as breast and prostate cancer. He's on staff at MultiCare Medical Center, Good Samaritan, St. Joseph, St. Francis and St. Clare hospitals, and Auburn General Hospital.

A board certified radiation oncologist, Dr. Bergman joined the staff of Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in 2002. He holds memberships with the Pierce County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association, American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Radiation Oncology, and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Herbert Wang

Dr. WangDr. Wang earned his medical degree from the University of California at Davis, School of Medicine. He completed a one-year internship at the University of California, San Francisco / California Pacific Medical Center prior to his residency and fellowship in radiation oncology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He remained as an instructor for one year at the University of Chicago before venturing into private practice. Dr. Wang is board certified.

Dr. Wang joined Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in August of 2004. He holds staff privileges at Auburn General Hospital, Good Samaritan, MultiCare Health System, and Franciscan Medical Group.

He holds memberships in multiple medical societies including: American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Radiology, American College of Radiation Oncology, American Medical Association, Pierce County Medical Association, and Washington State Medical Association.

Dr. Kevin Sanders

Dr. SandersA native of Alaska, Dr. Sanders received his medical degree and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Medical Scholars Program. He completed his radiation oncology residency at MD Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, which is consistently ranked as the number one cancer center in the country by U.S. News and Reports.

Dr. Sanders is extensively trained in all aspects of radiation treatment with a special expertise in highly conformal radiation treatment including Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatments (IMRT). The goal of this treatment is to deliver maximum dose to the tumor while avoiding surrounding normal tissues. He also completed a fellowship with the Seattle Prostate Institute on Prostate Brachytherapy. Dr. Sanders is board eligible by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiology.

Dr. Sanders joined the Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers team in 2006. He has membership in American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, American College of Radiology, American Brachytherapy Society, American Medical Association, Pierce County Medical Society and Washington State Medical Society.
